Advisory council: Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging is seeking a Lake County resident or someone employed in the county to represent the county on its Advisory Council. The position is for the remainder of an unexpired term, and the appointee will then be eligible for full three-year term. The primary qualifications required for this volunteer position are an interest in benefiting senior citizens and a desire to make the public aware of services available to seniors. Open house: Recognizing the critical role that Job Centers play in driving our economic recovery, the Illinois General Assembly has designated the week of Aug. 26 through Sept. 1 as “Workforce Development Week.” Members of the General Assembly are encouraging individuals, businesses, and governmental organizations to visit and promote the programs and services offered through local Workforce Investment Boards during this week. As part of the celebration, the Lake County Job Center will host an open house Aug. 30 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Waukegan Job Center, 1 N. Genesee St. The event will allow guests to tour the Job Center, learn more about training and job search support programs for youth and adults, and discover programs that help local businesses attract and retain a high-quality workforce. Auditions: Now in its 24th season, Dancenter North’s production of “The Magic of the Nutcracker” is a holiday tradition for many in Lake County. Auditions will begin with experienced ballet dancers ages 8 and up Aug. 28 at the studio at 540 N. Milwaukee Ave. From those selected at the initial auditions, a casting process will occur over the next three weeks to choose the parts those dancers will perform. Crossing repairs: The Canadian National Railway has scheduled repairs of the Diamond Lake Road grade crossing starting at 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27. The crossing should reopen to traffic the evening of Sept. 7. The signed detour route will be Route 60/83 to Route 60 to Route 45.
