WAUKEGAN — A routine traffic stop resulted in the arrest of a local man on a weapons charge.

Police stopped a vehicle driven by Walter E. Hayes III, 32, of the 2200 block of Western Avenue for a seat belt violation just after midnight Wednesday in the area of Grand and Baldwin avenues.

During the stop, it was discovered Hayes was driving on a suspended driver’s license. He was placed under arrest, at which time police found a loaded .38-caliber revolver under the driver’s seat.

Hayes was then charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, no Firearm Owners Identification card, driving while license suspended and the seat belt violation.

He was at the Lake County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
