Trunk or Treat: Trick-or-treaters are invited to a Trunk or Treat to be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, in the parking lot at the Foss Park Community Center, 1730 Lewis Ave., North Chicago. Treat-givers will sit outside decorated vehicles as children make the rounds. The event is sponsored by CeaseFire, a local violence prevention initiative. Great Lakes
Award: Naval Station Great Lakes is the first military installation to earn top honors in the National Gold Medal Grand Plaque Award of Excellence in Park and Recreation Management competition conducted by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association. Officials announced the awards Oct. 16 during the NRPA’s annual conference in Anaheim, Calif. This is the first year the awards have included an Armed Forces Recreation Award category for military morale, welfare and recreation programs. Great Lakes was one of four Grand Plaque finalists in the military category. The military category recognizes recreation programs for service members, their families, retirees, reservists and civilian employees.
