Ceremony: Veteran’s Day ceremony will be held Nov. 11 beginning at 10:30 a.m. at 75 North Ave. The event will begin with Voice of Democracy and Patriot Pen Presentations followed by raising the flag and a 21-gun salute. Ceremony: The public is invited to join Deerfield’s veterans Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial in southwest Jewett Park opposite the Metra train station. The program, sponsored by American Legion Post 738, will salute those who have served their nation both in time of war and peace. Post Commander John Coughenour will preside over the half-hour ceremonies. Participating will be Deerfield Mayor Harriet Rosenthal, Unit 738 Women’s Auxiliary President Joann Harrison, and Squadron Commander Frank Haney of Sons of the American Legion. Post Chaplain Floyd Sutton, a WWII veteran, will offer a prayer and local Cub Scouts will lead in the Pledge of Allegiance. Joe Pugliese, a Navy veteran of both World War II and Korea, will discuss his impressions of a recent Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Pugliese was one of 90 World War II veterans selected at no personal expense to visit the memorials of World War II, Viet Nam and Korea on the Capital Mall. During the afternoon, Legionnaires will visit Deerfield’s Gidwitz Place for Assisted Living to socialize and participate in a singalong with the aging veterans residing there. Ceremony: The annual Veterans Day ceremony will be held Nov. 9 at 10 a.m. at the College of Lake County, 19351 W. Washington St. The ceremony’s keynote speaker will be Debra Lewis, who served 20 years in the Navy as a hospital corpsman, retiring as a hospital corpsman first class (E6). Other speakers will include retired Army Col. Mike Peck, superintendent of the Lake County Veterans Assistance Commission; Joel Chmara, CLC speech instructor; and Darl Drummond, CLC vice president of student development. Waukegan High School JROTC will present the colors and a Navy chaplain will provide a prayer. Roll call: In honor of Veteran’s Day, Columbia College will participate in a National Roll Call Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. at Naval Station Great Lakes, Room 214 in the Lifelong Learning Center, and Building 617 at 2221 McDonough St. Columbia College staff and students will be reading the names of all United States service members killed in action since Jan. 1, 2012. Celebration and donations: Waukegan Township Park Place will honor area veterans at the annual veterans celebration and luncheon Nov. 10 at noon at Park Place Senior Center, 414 S. Lewis Ave. The event will include veteran guest speakers, North Chicago JROTC Color Guard, Waukegan High School JROTC Drill Team, Navy Band Great Lakes and a complimentary lunch. Also, vocalist and pianist Carolyn Werner will perform “Sentimental Journey.” Donations of new or gently used coats for men and women veterans will be accepted at Park Place through Nov. 10 and will be given to Lake County Veterans Assistance Program at the event. Parade: Veterans Day Parade will line up Nov. 11 at 9:30 a.m. at Grand Avenue and Genesee Street and step off at 10:30 a.m. It will proceed south on Genesee and west on Washington Street to Waukegan Veterans Plaza where there will be a moment of silence and rifle salute at 11:11 a.m. Details, (847) 599-2949.
