VERNON HILLS — An internal investigation by Bed, Bath and Beyond has led to an employee at the store being charged with theft of approximately $30,000.
Art Wickert, 39, of Racine, Wis., was arrested after the store’s management provided Vernon Hills police with a box of documents they believed were incriminating.
According to police spokeswoman Sharon Joseph, Wickert allegedly sought receipts on company computers, copied universal product codes off in-stock products and then issued himself fraudulent refunds.
The alleged scheme dates as far back as April.
Wickert worked at the Gurnee store for two years before transferring to Vernon Hills.
Joseph said the Gurnee Bed, Bath and Beyond store is now investigating its returns and lost merchandise reports from when Wickert was on staff.
