Even just hours after suffering the stroke, the 73-year-old Ditka told the Chicago Sun-Times from his hospital room: “I’m doing fine.”
Ditka spent Saturday at NorthShore Highland Park Hospital, where he was in good condition, according to a hospital spokesman. He told Sun-Times columnist Rick Telander that he rested and watched college football. When Telander asked him on the phone if he needed anything, Ditka replied, “A fillet!”
The legendary coach was discharged from the hospital by late Sunday morning.
Ditka was at Bob O’Link Golf Club in Highland Park on Friday when he began to feel woozy and had some difficulty speaking, said Ditka’s agent, Steven Mendell.
Friday evening, Ditka told Telander from his hospital room, “I’m OK. I’ll probably be here overnight, but I’m fine. Thanks for asking.”
“He sounded upbeat,” like his usual mile-a-minute self,” Telander said.
Ditka, who has maintained relatively good health in recent years, suffered a minor heart attack as Bears coach in 1988, but he was back at work the next week.
