What started as a garage fire in North Chicago on Friday quickly accelerated due to high winds and spread to two other structures before lapping at a third.
A call of “smoke in the area” at approximately 10:45 a.m. alerted North Chicago firefighters, who responded to a “fully-involved” blaze at 810 18th St., west of Sheridan Road. North Chicago Fire Chief Dell Urban said the fire spread from the garage and threatened a house to the south at the same address.
“It also started a garage to the north on fire and it compromised a garage across the alley,” Urban said.
Firefighters were able to prevent extensive damage to the home, which suffered some melted siding and to the third garage.
“They did a great job,” Urban said. “It was a quick stop. A few more minutes and it would have probably started the residence on fire, but the guys acted quickly.”
No injuries were reported, according to North Chicago Fire Cmdr. Josh Rickabaugh, who said his crew was back in the firehouse shortly after 1 p.m.
Mutual aid responders arrived from Waukegan, Zion, Lake Forest. Great Lakes and Knollwood to help with manpower and water supply. Cause of the fire is under investigation,
