Traffic tickets swelled during holiday enforcements

Lake County police departments recently completed Thanksgiving holiday sobriety and seat belt enforcement efforts under grants from the Illinois Department of Transportation Division of Traffic Safety.

The enforcement activity consisted of roadside safety/sobriety checkpoints, seat belt enforcement zones and increased patrols for DUI and seat belt violations and were conducted from Nov. 12 through Nov. 25.

In Waukegan, police had six “seat belt enforcement zones” and six “saturation patrols” that resulted in three driving under the influence arrests, 42 seat belt tickets and four child safety seat violations, seven suspended or revoked driver’s license (DL) arrests, two drug arrests and one person arrested on a warrant. Seven uninsured motorists were ticketed.

A total of 739 vehicles passed through the seat belt enforcement checkpoints and 98 tickets were written during the enforcement campaign.

In Park City, there was one DUI arrest, 34 seat belt violations and two child safety seat violations, two felony drug arrests, three suspended or revoked DL tickets, 14 uninsured motorist tickets, 10 speeding tickets and 13 other citations were issued.

In Libertyville, officers conducted 221 traffic stops. There were four arrests for DUI, one citation for seat belt violation, three suspended or revoked arrests, two arrests for no valid driver’s licenses, 71 citations for speeding, three uninsured motorist tickets, one citation for open alcohol, one citation for possessing marijuana, one citation for drug paraphernalia, and numerous other equipment and moving violations.

In Gurnee, there were 11 saturation deployments resulting in 54 vehicles stopped. Twelve officers worked an extra 59 hours and more than 320 miles were driven during the patrols. There were two drug- or alcohol-related arrests, 46 seat belt violations, one speeding citation and 80 tickets for equipment or moving violations.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office traffic enforcement details were concentrated on Black Wednesday and Black Friday. A total of 63 traffic citations were issued on Black Wednesday including three for suspended or revoked driver’s licenses, one no valid license, three arrests for possessing marijuana, two unlawful possessions of a controlled substance, two DUI arrests and one warrant arrest.

A total of 33 traffic citations were issued on Black Friday, including three suspended or revoked arrests, one no valid DL, one possessing marijuana, and one unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

The Black Friday detail also included a four-hour handicapped parking enforcement in the village of Deer Park. There were six citations for parking in handicapped spaces without plates or placard; two citations for fraudulent use of a handicapped placard and two placards were seized for revocation.
