Authorities are looking for a suspect who robbed the TCF Bank inside the Jewel-Osco at Grand Avenue and Green Bay Road. They believe it could be the same suspect in a Zion bank robbery earlier in the week.
On Thursday just before noon, a black male wearing a dark blue puffy winter coat walked into the bank at 922 N. Green Bay Road and passed a note demanding money. He received about $1,000, Waukegan police said Friday. He was also wearing a red Bulls hat, black jeans and Nike-Jordan gym shoes.
He escaped, but lost his hat in the process. Video surveillance footage confirmed what two tellers told police about the robbery.
Police said the offender may be responsible for the TCF Bank robbery Tuesday afternoon inside the Jewel-Osco at 1400 21st St., Zion. The descriptions are similar, except the suspect in the Zion robbery implied he had a gun.
The robber in the Zion case made off with just over $200. He fled southbound into an alley near Elisha and Emmaus avenues.
The Waukegan holdup is the sixth bank robbery in Lake County this year, slightly behind the eight bank robberies in 2011.
Anyone with any details regarding the suspect is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers (847) 662-2222, the FBI (847) 290-0525, or Waukegan police at (847) 599-2608.
