Talk of the County

The Republicans’ fiscal counter-proposal goes after Social Security and Medicare. They want to lower the cost-of-living increase on Social Security. Many elderly people are at poverty levels because Social Security doesn’t cover enough already. Perhaps they should look at the 1 percent not getting Social Security at all. It’s obvious they don’t need it.
The Emancipation Proclamation was based on the president’s constitutional authority as commander-in-chief of the armed forces; it was not a law passed by Congress. It proclaimed all slaves in Confederate territory to be forever free. The Proclamation immediately resulted in the freeing of 50,000 slaves, with nearly all the rest (of the 3.1 million) actively freed as Union armies advanced. The Proclamation did not compensate the owners, did not itself outlaw slavery and did not make the ex-slaves citizens. It made the destruction of slavery an explicit war goal, in addition to the goal of reuniting the Union. Please understand that.
So the county spends $325,000 putting in street lights and sidewalks along Greenleaf Avenue north of Belvidere. The first thing I see coming down there after dark now is a runner jogging on the roadway instead of using the brand-new sidewalks.
Nice to see that Chicago has the bravest policemen in the world. All they know how to do is shoot dogs and beat up on 98-pound women. Boy, are they ever brave.
When will President Obama begin to understand that his administration’s problem is his uncontrolled and wasteful spending, not taxes? His proposed tax increase for the rich will only cover the government’s total expenses for eight days! Except for Obama, no one can logically believe that economic prosperity can be achieved by spending more than they take in, could they?
Regarding Judge Hall on the front page of the paper Dec. 3 with his neck brace on. Nobody feels sorry for a guy that feels he’s above the law. If he wasn’t a judge, he would have never got out of that DUI. He should donate the $15,000 that he should have paid for his DUI to the YMCA and get it over with. Forget the publicity stunts.
Call his bluff
House Speaker John Boehner is giving Obama a chance at tax reform. He has true solutions. Instead of going through these annual stalemates, Obama should forget about his campaign promises, call Boehner’s bluff or work out long-term solutions.
Into the fire
President Obama is not running away from anything. He is running toward the fire. He’s a hero. As far as the fiscal cliff goes, the Republicans don’t want to do the right thing and they don’t want to deal with him. Get a life and stop hating.
If they don’t work out the fiscal cliff, then they should not get paid or get any benefits. That would help the economy. All the politicians are making too much and benefitting too much at the cost of the taxpayer. They have to remember who they are working for.
Thank you to the village of Winthrop Harbor. Mary Avenue looks great. The new road looks wonderful and thank you for picking up our leaves.
Would someone let Jereme Richmond know he may actually have to work a real job someday? This guy loves to do nothing except bounce a ball around and look for a way to get by without ever preparing for where he will really end up: A working stiff like all the rest of us.
The state Senate approved driver’s licenses for illegals. I don’t approve of that. I think it should have been put on a ballot to let the people of the state decide whether they want this to happen or not. Everyone knows that the legislators have a personal agenda which is furthering their political career at the expense of the health, safety and welfare of other people of the state of Illinois. They pander to the Hispanic community to preserve their seats in the Senate and the House of Representatives and let the state residents be dammed. I have a message for them: We are not collateral damage as you treat us. We will remember this come time for you to be re-elected. There will be a drive to get you out of office and to see that this can be repealed. You don’t have the right to play God. You should have consulted your constituents to see if they approve. I was never contacted. We’re the ones that have to be out on the streets with them, not you.
Gun control taunts
A couple of days ago, the tragedy of Jovan Belcher killing his girlfriend and then turning the gun on himself gives the extreme left a chance to once again taunt gun control. The problem wasn’t the gun, it was the person who used the gun. It’s the person who did that is at fault and they will be held accountable on Judgment Day.
Food pantry foods
It’s that time of year when a lot of people donate to food pantries. I see applesauce, canned fruit and macaroni and cheese which is super unhealthy. What kind of favor are you doing to people that are already predisposed to diabetes and hypertension, which are diseases of poverty? Give them more carbohydrates and protein like a can of tuna, a box of powdered milk and maybe some high-fiber cereals. This is what the pantries need — protein and fiber.
More Democratic rewriting of history. Rahm Emanuel, the former chief of staff of the Obama administration, asked the female bartender, who was brutally beaten by a Chicago cop, to set aside the verdict in her suit. Why? It’s because the judge found that there was a code of silence that she wasn’t protected under the law like others would be. Is it just a Democratic trait or is it just a Democratic Illinois trait? Obama rewrote history when the Benghazi massacre turned into an impromptu protest over a video.
The socialist way
There is probably no better example of the dumbing down of America with news of Kate Middleton’s pregnancy and morning sickness. We have heard more about this than we have about Fast and Furious, Benghazi, the drone that was found before the election and more. Americans are so ignorant they can be told lies and believe it as truth. That is a socialist way.
Why would the Republican lemmings follow Obama over the fiscal cliff just to spite President Obama. Are the citizens of the U.S. going to remember these representatives of the people and rally together to denounce this tax increase looming over our heads, like the Sword of Damocles?
Lead fishing tackle
Lead is toxic, its use is banned in many states already. It’s time for Illinois to join in, too. What I’m talking about is the use of lead fishing tackle. It’s found in our lakes, streams and oceans — tons of it has been accumulated after time. It makes it into our waterways and all aquatic species. It has been documented in at least 25 species of water birds. Birds cannot pass lead through their digestive system. This causes a slow, painful death for these animals. It only takes one lead split shot to kill an adult bird. We are talking about eagles, loons, swans, ducks, herons, egrets and many more. We already ban this toxic item in paint, toys, jewelry and the list goes on. It’s up to us and our state legislators to do the rest.
