LIBERTYVILLE — No students or pedestrians were injured when a gray pickup truck traveling westbound on Rockland Road veered off the street and onto the playground of Rockland Elementary School at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
The 69-year-old driver’s identity was not been disclosed by Libertyville police, who said the investigation is ongoing. He was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center, Libertyville, where he died.
Libertyville Grade School District 70 officials said they are thankful that students were not at recess when the accident occurred. Parents were notified of the mishap by e-mail from District 70 officials.
Police closed Rockland Road between Milwaukee Avenue and Stewart Avenue because of the crash.
The truck stopped before reaching the building, but did hit a parked van, drove through a fence, wrecked a fire hydrant and also hit a bike rack and mature pine tree.
School officials said recess was held indoors while police handled the scene.
