The Waukegan Park District’s SportsPark Field No. 2 has been selected by the Sports Turf Managers Association as the 2012 Schools/Parks Soccer Field of the Year.
“The Field of the Year Award validates the intense dedication of our members,” said Kim Heck, CEO of the Sports Turf Managers Association, the sponsoring organization for the award. “The challenges that Noel Brusius faced and the innovative solutions he employed are truly amazing and award worthy. He and his crew are very deserving of this prestigious award.
The award will be presented during the association’s annual awards banquet Jan. 18 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The STMA Field of the Year Award program began in 1992 and awards are given for five types of fields: Baseball, football, soccer, softball and sporting grounds.
The award is one of several the park district has garnered this year.
The district was a National Recreation and Park Association Gold Medal finalist, one of four park districts in the population size category of 50,00 to 100,00. Finalists were asked to create and submit a 12-minute video about the Waukegan Park District,.
The district also received national accreditation from the National Recreation and Park Association Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies, which assesses best practices within the parks and recreational profession. There are only three other districts in Illinois with national accreditation.
The accreditation review included the Waukegan Park District’s authority, role and responsibility, planning, organization and administration, human resources, financial management, programs and services management, facility and land use management, public safety, law enforcement and security, risk management and evaluation and research.
