New data reported on Illinois hospital infections

CHICAGO — Information on two life-threatening infections that can spread in hospitals has been added to Illinois’ online Hospital Report Card.
It’s the first time statewide hospital infection data have been available for Clostridium difficile and MRSA.
Clostridium difficile — or C-diff — is a common cause of intestinal infection in hospitals.
MRSA is short for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus — a type of bacteria resistant to certain antibiotics.
Illinois law required hospitals to start reporting these patient infections in January.
Consumers now can see hospital infection rates on the Hospital Report Card Web site. But the Illinois Department of Public Health cautions against using the information to compare hospitals because the data have not been adjusted to account for differences in patient populations.
