A former Waukegan High School girls basketball coach has been charged with criminal sexual assault after the school found out about an off-campus sexual encounter with a student two years ago.
Brandon Brown, 30, of the 3000 block of Kathe Lane, Waukegan, who also is a physical education teacher at the high school, was charged with one count of criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony.
His bond was set at $50,000 on Wednesday.
District 60 has suspended Brown for the incident, which allegedly involved a female senior who went to his home one time for a sexual encounter during the first semester in 2010.
The school learned of the incident after another student recently reported that Brown made her feel uncomfortable in class.
Brown made a statement to police admitting to the sexual encounter, authorities said.
“We are demonstrating through our swift and deliberate actions that we will not tolerate any sort of employee conduct that violates the trust or safety of our students, parents, or this community,” District 60 Superintendent Donaldo Batiste said Thursday.
“I can assure the community that our district and its more than 2,000 employees will continue to work tirelessly to regain the trust that this isolated incident has compromised, and we will continue to maintain the safety and well-being of our students as a top priority,” he said.
Brown has worked for the district for eight year.
“Mr. Brown violated a sacred trust between parents, children and their schools,” Police Chief Daniel Greathouse said Thursday.
Greathouse said Illinois law allows for enhanced felony classification of the charges for those like Brown “who are in a position of trust and chooses to prey on our children in such a despicable manner.”
Brown coached girls basketball at Waukegan High for seven years.
He was varsity head coach for two years, 2010-11 and 2011-12, replacing Windell Piercy II.
Brown was replaced as Waukegan coach this season by Shanta Parnell, who was one of his an assistants last year.
Brown’s first year as head coach was ruined when then-sophomore Syerra Cunningham went down with a knee injury in January. They won fewer than 10 games.
His second year as coach, 2011-12, he had Cunningham back as a player and the squad went 3-25 for the season.
