$5M in improvements eyed at two Lake Forest High campuses

LAKE FOREST — Nearly $5 million in capital improvements could be conducted at Lake Forest High School’s two campuses over the next four years.
After a couple of years spending as little as $200,000 annually in capital improvements due to the economic downtown, District 115 officials could consider issuing as much as $4.9 million in bonds this spring to catch up on work that has been delayed.
“With the 2008 economic downtown, we deferred several projects,” said Allen Albus, deputy superintendent of finance and operations. “We did life-safety work only. Our capital expenses were very low.”
Albus noted that $3.5 million of the proposed work is for items with expected lifespans of more than 10 years. Subsequently, the district can finance that $3.5 million in work over a decade to spread out the costs, Albus said.
The District 115 Board of Education on Tuesday night got its first look at the tentative fiscal year 2013-16 capital expenditures.
No votes were taken on any of the proposed projects or the potential bond issue. The informational presentation was to give board members an idea of the capital improvements being proposed.
Bigger-ticket items on the district’s potential improvement list include:
$700,000 to replace air handlers in the natatorium,
$400,000 to remanufacture boiler room chillers, a continual source of Freon leaks.
$200,000 for a new maintenance shed at the track.
