Updated: February 25, 2013 12:40PM

BARRINGTON — A family was able to safely escape and two pets were rescued from a fire that seriously damaged their home Tuesday night.

Firefighters arrived at the home in the 100 block of North Hager Avenue, just north of Lake-Cook Road, within four minutes of the call at 9:38 p.m., according to the Barrington Fire Department. They found two adults and two children who had escaped, with only one minor injury that was treated at the scene.

Firefighters started an interior attack but conditions worsened and flames became visible through the roof. They were told that two family dogs were in the basement, and crews were able to rescue them without incident.

The fire was out by shortly after 10:30 p.m., but the cause remained under investigation Wednesday.

Sixteen area fire departments assisted at the scene.
