State Rep. Scott Drury, D-Highwood, said Tuesday he has accepted Lt. Governor Sheila Simon’s invitation to participate in a statewide Firearms Working Group that will address issues such as concealed carry and an assault weapons ban.
With a federal appeals court in Chicago recently striking down an Illinois law that prohibited citizens from carrying concealed weapons in public — stating that the law was unconstitutional — lawmakers must draft new firearms legislation.
As a member of the panel, Drury, a former federal prosecutor, will work with Simon and other newly elected Democratic and Republican legislators in an effort to reach consensus.
The working group will give Drury and the other participants the opportunity to learn different perspectives and bridge the geographical divide on gun ownership and use in Illinois.
“I am looking forward to working with lawmakers across the aisle and across the state as we try to craft sensible firearms legislation that will keep our communities and children safe,” stated Drury, the new representative for the 58th House District.
“As someone who has worked with law enforcement and removed illegal guns from our streets, I believe I will add a unique perspective to the working group.”
The Firearms Working Group intends to dialogue with stakeholders on all sides of the debate as it works toward consensus on the firearms legislation.
Meetings will be held in communities around Illinois, where members will meet with gun owners, hunters, families impacted by gun violence, domestic violence advocates, mental health experts and law enforcement officials, among others.
Members will also learn to safely operate a firearm with sportsmen at the Sparta World Shooting Complex in downstate Sparta.
Drury’s 58th District includes all or portions of Bannockburn, Deerfield, Highland Park, Highwood, Knollwood, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Lincolnshire, North Chicago and Riverwoods.
