Former North Chicago police chief pleads not guilty to theft

Former North Chicago Chief of Police Michael Newsome pleaded not guilty to theft of government property, official misconduct and misallocation of funds Wednesday.
Newsome faces a maximum of 30 years in prison if convicted of the most serious charge, Circuit Judge George Bridges said at Newsome’s arraignment.
Newsome is alleged to have stolen thousands of dollars from the city’s asset forfeiture funds.
He is due back in court Feb. 14. He remains free from custody on bond.
