A few possible contenders for the papacy:
♦ Cardinal Peter Turkson (Ghana) — Turkson, 64, is a leading African candidate. He heads the Vatican justice and peace council, a position he was appointed to by Pope Benedict XVI.
♦ Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle (Manila, Philippines) — Tagle, 55, is the youngest of the group of possible successors and just became a cardinal in 2012. Tagle is close with Pope Benedict XVI through his work on the International Theological Commission.
♦ Cardinal João Bráz de Aviz (Brazil) — Bráz de Aviz, 65, is an advocate for the poor and powerless in South America. He also became a cardinal less than a year ago.
♦ Cardinal Marc Ouellet (Canada) — Ouellet, 68, serves in a position comparable to the Vatican’s chief of staff. He previously served as archbishop of Quebec and has done missionary work in South America.
