Talk of the County

Blame Republicans!

Republicans want to shut everything down on March 1. They don’t care about the people, they just care about the billionaires. One good thing is it’s getting to the point where they won’t be able to elect a Republican as a dog catcher. We are going to end up with a one-party system, the Democrats. The Republicans don’t have anyone to blame but themselves.

Just the facts

Oddly enough, new research was recently published about how many birds are killed by cats. It’s actual science, so they don’t give one number, they express it as a range: Cats kill between 1.4 and 3.7 billion birds each year. To borrow a line from the old “Dragnet” TV show: Just the facts.

The predators

I see where the Democrats in Springfield have decided that people using public transportation, public housing and public areas should not be allowed to conceal and carry a weapon. They’re just setting the people up for places where the predators can go. I wonder if the politicians exempt themselves from that restriction with their bodyguards that conceal their weapons?

Public unions

I was listening to the radio and a public union spokesman keep reiterating how their pension benefits are protected by the Illinois Constitution and it was written that way to protect workers’ rights. His suggestion to cure the pension deficit of $100 billion was to have a graduated tax. In other words, the more you make in Illinois the more tax you pay on your income. What he failed to mention is that the Illinois flat tax is also a constitutional amendment which is protected. Isn’t it funny how when the union wants their way the Illinois Constitution is Scripture, but when they want to deviate it then it can be thrown out the window.

Hard to find

Disrespect for the dead. Why should the obituaries be so hard to locate in The News-Sun? This morning I finally found them on page 38 of a 48-page newspaper.

Defense cuts

Why does Obama keep threatening to cut the military to try to save his budget? Instead, they need to cut the pay and benefits of all the politicians in Washington, D.C. They all abuse the system. No need for Obama’s wife to be flying around the country in Air Force One, with all her entourage, and Obama himself is abusing the position of president. Pelosi and Joe Biden fly back and forth to their home states on a regular basis at the taxpayers’ expense. Time to cut where all the waste is, not on the military, who for the most part barely make a liveable wage. Too many of our military are dependent on food stamps. This is an outrage when Washington spends.

Triple J

Regarding Jessie Jackson Jr. going to prison and being able to get a pension for the rest of his life. The judge can still deny that because he has broken the law. Why should he get a pension? There are police officers that have been in compromising positions and because they made the wrong decision their pensions weren’t given to them. It’s just important to them as it is Jessie Jackson Jr.

Feral cats — yum!

About the feral cat debate. Well, I’m doing my part. I love cats. They’re delicious.

Good Samaritan

I’d like to thank the Good Samaritan who plowed the end of my driveway on Metropolitan Avenue in Waukegan. I really appreciate it because I wouldn’t have been able to get out without you. Thank you so much.

Link’s defeat

I think the recent election in Waukegan has illustrated one very important point. Sen. Terry Link couldn’t be elected as a dog catcher in Waukegan. We are over him. I think it might be time for him to move on.

Head Start works

In a letter to the editor someone stated that Head Start doesn’t work. Head Start does work. The earlier you get children into an education program the better off they are. If some of those benefits in some areas are lost by the time those kids reach third grade is a reflection of what happens in the homes of these kids. It shows that our educational system cannot be there without the support of parents.

Call Jesse

In response to “More diversity.” It sounds like something the Rev. Jesse Jackson should get involved with. Why don’t you give him a call?

Good plowing

I would just like to thank the workers at the Public Works Department in Round Lake Beach for the fantastic job of removing the snow from our streets, including all the side streets.

Photo ID

About Link card fraud. I think the Link card should have a photo ID on it. That would solve all the problems and who belongs to it.

Our energy

I’m a senior and I live on a fixed income. I have had to change my life because of the price of gas. I suggest that we return to the WWII era and nationalize the energy industry. These industries are reporting record profits. It’s our energy, so why do we have to pay for it?

North Chicago elections

About the North Chicago aldermanic election. People complain daily about the police and North Chicago in general, but then a mere 1,000 people showed up to vote. Whatever you guys get is what you’ve got coming. It was your decision.

Overcrowded housing

Back in the 1990s, the city of Waukegan tried to do something about the housing overcrowding. But they were charged with discrimination by the Clinton administration, which included Attorney General Janet Reno, the Justice Department and had to pay a $200,000 fine. Now the homeowners of Waukegan are paying the price with property values falling like rocks and their school taxes going up.

The newspaper has done it again. They have made a bad paper worse. The local stock market quotes are no longer there, the obituaries are in the back of the paper and the automobile ads are in the middle. I guess I’ll change like The News-Sun. I’ll change from reading the paper to not reading it anymore.

Little help here

We live in a Democratic state. Dick Durbin is supposed to be one of the most powerful people in Washington and be right in there with Obama. You would think Illinois would benefit from this. Why isn’t there any job creation or innovation here in Illinois? We are just struggling along and we can’t pay our bills. Come Obama and Durbin, help Illinois out a little bit.
