Sen.-elect Mark Kirk has sent Gov. Pat Quinn and U.S. House Speaker Representative Nancy Pelosi a letter announcing that at 5 p.m. Monday he will resign his seat in Congress.

On Monday night, Kirk will be sworn in to replace U.S. Sen. Roland Burris as Illinois’ junior senator.

“Serving in the 10th District of Illinois has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Kirk wrote in both letters. “We saved a veterans hospital, expanded commuter rail and defended Lake Michigan.”

The Highland Park Republican has been in Washington, D.C., meeting with his new colleagues in the Senate, requesting committee assignments and welcoming Illinois’ five newly elected Republican congressmen.

Kirk’s seat in Congress will remain vacant until Republican Bob Dold is sworn in Jan. 5.

Kirk beat Democrat Alexi Giannoulias 48 percent to 46 percent for the Senate seat once held by President Obama.
