Talk of the County

Straight, gay

Regarding gays in the military. I think they should be in the military. All were born men and they should be in the military. If only the straight men went into the military and got killed, then all we would have is gay men.

Classified documents

It is a very, very sad commentary when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton laughs about the leak of classified materials, while President Obama does not appear he is bothered by the leak. In cases past, people got shot or hanged for leaking classified documents, but neither would know that.

Justice system

Jerry Hobbs has every right to sue the county and anyone involved in this poor excuse for a justice system we have. The police think they are above the law and can get away with anything. Finally, someone will be looking into this and maybe, just maybe, something will change. Too bad it is going to cost a lot. All this just to say you got your guy, even if it’s the wrong one.

A no-brainer

My learned friend is too smart by half when he states that Waukegan did not refuse a casino yet “wisely” declined to pursue its establishment a third time. This is the kind of double speak we’ve come to expect from the Sabonjian administration. The term idiot savant comes to mind, if we’re stuck with a piece of dirt for a dollar store, while Park City reaps the benefits, far exceeding any tax increase. This would be a no-brainer for Bozo the Clown in these volatile economic times: Attract development; don’t raise taxes. Even Obama got the message.

Nice tracks

I would just like to say how nice the railroad tracks are at 173 and 21st Street now that the job is completed. Thank you very much. Beautiful job.

See what happens

Why is it the government always talks raising taxes and never talks pay cuts, no paid sick days, no government vehicles to drive home with free gas cards? How about 20 years to be fully vested! No more unions! Give me a week and I’ll cut the government waste and you don’t even have to pay me. Go ahead Waukegan, raise those property taxes and see what happens. Homeowners will just walk away from their homes because you just made it impossible for them to keep or sell!

Gays or gangs

What do you want in our military branches of service? Do you want gays or do you want all the bad gang members that are getting all the information on every kind of tactics you can think of? Think about it.

More freebies

Regarding “Coats for kids”: I think it’s a wonderful idea and is very nice that all those people donated coats. It never ceases to amaze me that all this wonderful cheer we see around Christmas time and throughout the year of the free giving to help people. The majority of people receiving the spirit of giving from others are the Hispanics who reside in Waukegan and the Round Lake area. It’s just more freebies again for the Hispanic community.

Affordable housing

I see Fountain Square will have affordable housing. Doesn’t Waukegan have enough affordable housing in our town? No wonder they need to keep raising our property taxes.

Campaign promises

Regarding President Obama breaking his campaign promises: The president promised there would be changes and he backed down on what he promised the people. Now he’s saying he tried. I would respect him more for acknowledging what he said and realizing he couldn’t keep his promise to the people.

Talented students

I had the opportunity to see “The Crucible” at Waukegan High School on Dec. 4. The students did an amazing job! It would have been nice to see more of the faculty and administration there as well.

Sic transit gloria

I keep reading about rich senior citizens riding the transit system with a bus pass. Well, I’ve never seen any rich senior citizens riding the bus yet.

Hobbs’ confession

If Jerry Hobbs was stupid enough to say, “Yes, I killed my daughter” then he’s the dummy. The police are responsible to a degree, but Hobbs has been in jail before and knows something about the law and his rights. Why did he sign the paper with the confession?

Dream Act vote

One more reason to be glad Melissa Bean will no longer be our congresswoman come January: She voted for the Dream Act.

Super filthy rich

Judy Masterson hit it on the head again! It’s OK to be rich, even super rich, but super filthy rich? History repeats itself.

She stood alone

The only person who voted not to raise taxes in Waukegan was Edith Newsome. Why didn’t The News-Sun put her name in the paper? All the other aldermen were recognized for their vote. I would like to see her name in the paper so when the next election comes around people will know that she stood for them and not the other way around.

Happy holydays

To all you people out there too ashamed, shy or intimidated to say “Merry Christmas,” just remember that He’s the reason for the season.

The last straw

After a recent prolonged Comcast high-speed Internet outage, my computers couldn’t re-connect to the service, even after service had been restored. I spent a total of four hours waiting for a service representative, then was passed off to a router company that wanted to be paid for their consultation. Further attempts to gain Comcast’s support were futile and a total waste of more hours. Why should I have to bear the costs for network repairs when Comcast caused the problem? It seems I have to cut off my long-term relationship with Comcast and give my dollars to a satellite company. This was definitely the last straw.

It’s going to cost

I wonder if the people of Lake County can sue the officials who railroaded Mr. Hobbs because what they did was illegal. It’s going to cost the citizens of Lake County millions of dollars and you can bet they are going to raise your taxes.

Blood saves lives

I can’t believe the person who was complaining about illegal immigrants giving blood. God gave us all the same blood that flows through our veins. All blood is tested for all diseases before it is put into your body. I’m sure you’d feel differently if anything happened to yourself or your child and you needed that blood. All blood is the same and all blood saves lives.

Sen. Durbin

Is Senator Durbin thinking of retiring? I think he would lose his next election in Illinois. Or is he counting on his new citizens’ votes for him?

Taking a pass

First the mayor and the city of Waukegan lay off a bunch of people and cut the services to their residents. Then, the mayor gave a lot of money to the Karcher Hotel for redevelopment and to the College of Lake County to tear down a building. Now we take a pass on $2.28 million for police. And then they want to raise our taxes? I can’t imagine what is going on other than someone that doesn’t know what they’re doing.

Social Security

I would like to know why the government makes cuts on Social Security and Medicare to the people who can least afford it to pay for their other pipe dreams? Why don’t they extend the Social Security withheld from our wages for as long and as much as we earn? They would have enough money to pay for it for the next 100 years.

New math

We have been told for the past several years that Social Security will run out of money in a few years. President Obama’s solution is to further reduce funding for this program by reducing Social Security payroll withholding by 2 percent. This must by the Democratic Party’s version of modern math: Improve funding by reducing income.

Link’s award

Regarding the award given to Senator Link by the political organization here in Illinois for the best legislator in 2010. They failed to mention that his no-smoking law, which he was a main sponsor, has cost Illinois millions of dollars in revenue according to the gaming commission. Not to mention the hundreds of neighborhood taverns that were forced out of business due to his law. Maybe next year they can pick somebody else.

Pay up

Taxes will go up and there’s nothing we can do about it. There’s no free lunch and there never has been. Get used to it and pay for it.

It could happen

This is to the person who thought it was appropriate for the Park City police to harass the handicapped person who was attempting to cross the street: You better hope that you are never disabled in any way because the same thing could happen to you.

Disheartening TOTC

It’s disheartening that during this time of year when we should be thankful for all the blessings in our lives, that you can read TOTC with nothing but negative comments. I would like to congratulate the people that rose above all this negativity and are giving thanks where it’s deserved.
