Tot brothers recovering from crash in Avon Township

Updated: April 2, 2011 5:33PM

The 2- and 3-year-old brothers who were thrown from their vehicle in a collision Monday at Rollins Road and Route 45 are beginning to recover.

Their father, Calvin Jackson Sr., 26, died of head trauma, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Neither Jackson nor the children were wearing seat belts, and there were no child safety seats in the 1995 Jeep Cherokee in which they were passengers.

The two children were identified by the sheriff’s office as Calvin Jr., 3, and Clarence, 2, who were flown to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, from Advocate Condell Medical Center, Libertyville, after the 9:22 a.m. crash. The sheriff’s office said they were listed in stable condition and were doing well.

The driver of the Jeep, Houston Neals, 18, of Waukegan, remained in Advocate Condell’s intensive care unit Tuesday night, and his condition was upgraded from critical to fair condition, according to a hospital spokesman.

Neals’ front seat passenger, Laquaysha Johnson, 17, was upgraded to stable condition at the same hopsital and was expected to be discharged soon, possibly today.

The driver who hit the Jeep, Adeliata Espinoza, 46, of Round Lake Beach, has not been ticketed. A preliminary investigation found she had run a red light while travelling east on Rollins Road in unincorporated Avon Township. Espinoza and her 2-year-old daughter were treated at the scene, and her blood was drawn at Vista Medical Center East, Waukegan, for testing.

The sheriff’s office said charges should be forthcoming soon pending review with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office.
