Lights out

Would the last business leaving Illinois please turn out the lights?

Trapp Auditorium

Thank you to Waukegan’s Trapp Renovation Committee for their hard work under the leadership of Jean Windberg. Once again, the community concert series will be able to present the Chinese acrobats to the entire Lake County community. Previously, the Chinese acrobats were unable to come until the Trapp Auditorium was renovated. Now it’s safe and they will be back next season. We need funds now for new lighting and sound system so we can once again continue with the programs at the Trapp Auditorium. Go, Trapp!

Howling good time

On behalf of all the local Cub Scout packs and their families, I would like to say thank you to the Chicago Wolves for hosting their annual Pine Wood Derby and treating us to a great hockey game. They obviously know that these young men are going to be some of our future leaders of our community and we need to encourage them to be good citizens with good moral values. If you could help out your local Cub Scout organization, your donations would be appreciated. They have great intentions to help their community.

Start at the top

Start laying off the politicians and then you’ll make more money. You start making the budget cuts at the top, not at the bottom. Same thing with the school administrations. Since all the teachers are getting laid off, now we don’t need all the administrators.

Living, learning

As a disabled veteran from the Korean War’s Chosin Reservoir, I never, ever thought that my country would allow NATO to tell us what to do with our war in Libya. I guess it’s the old adage, “live and learn.”

Regime change

It’s the stupidity of us poor taxpayers that believe the politicians are going to do something to cut costs and then they give themselves raises. We have to change the whole legislative branch. It’s supposed to be the government by the people, for the people. They’re not for the people. They’re for themselves.

Healthy care

I work at a local hospital and our health-care system is so broken. Everybody should get a certain amount of benefits and you could use it over your lifetime. If you waste it all in your 20s by having nine kids or who are going to drug rehabs, 20 times you’re out of luck.

Extreme logic

It’s amazing how people know so little about the job of being president of the United States. In the March 28 TOTC, one individual complained about the president traveling to Brazil and therefore was unable to monitor the activity taking place in Libya. Don’t they understand that his job is 24 hours a day and seven days a week? Wherever he is, his staff is keeping him constantly aware of events in America and around the world. Taking this individual’s logic to its extreme, the president shouldn’t even be allowed to sleep.

Shameful propaganda

Comment regarding “Commie pinkos.” People who write this propaganda are shameful. The newspaper itself and the community should be more responsible in how it depicts unions and other people struggling to survive in this tough economy. Union members like cops, firemen and city workers are not trying to overthrow the country. There’s no Marxist agenda. Knock it off or you will see some kind of uprising that turns ugly.

Royal wedding

The British government is in big trouble just like ours. They’re losing jobs, they don’t have enough tax revenue and all we hear on the television is about the royal wedding which is going to cost over $50 million. That makes no sense to me. It’s a terrible thing to happen when times are tough. Maybe we need a king and queen. I would vote for Oprah as queen and Donald Trump as king.

Who’s responsible?

According to an interview published in The News-Sun on March 28, Waukegan Ald. Sam Cunningham is offended that Mayor Sabonjian appears not to trust the members of the City Council. The mayor apparently holds them responsible for the woeful fiscal condition of the city. If the elected and appointed officials of the previous administration are not responsible for the financial mess, who actually does deserve the blame? From my perspective, personal integrity demands an admission from the individuals who are eager to “serve” their constituents that they have failed miserably.

Past proclamations

If Japan’s nuclear reactor has dumbfounded the scientific experts, what makes the U.S. think they have all the bases covered and have all the scenarios figured out? I tend to believe that as the Titanic was touted as indestructible, we should have learned from the past proclamations of indestructibility that we as humans are not infallible.

Mail problems

Isn’t it amazing how the Postal Service in Washington cries about the mail problems, not having enough money, closing down facilities, etc. But has anybody bothered to check the warehouses and the pilot post offices they have to see where all the mail is being held back at? They’re holding back the mail there and not delivering it. Why?

New coroner

I would like to know why on earth Lake County Board Chairman David Stolman has appointed former Waukegan Police Chief Artis Yancey to head the coroner’s office. I would love to know what he was thinking. And I thought that we were going to clean up the coroner’s office.

Congressional approval

Agree or not about the wars President Bush entered into — Afghanistan and Iraq — after Congress gave approval. President Obama entered into war in Libya on his own order. Congress did not give him permission to put our troops in harm’s way in Libya.
