Celebrity Chef Gale Gand has joined Elawa Farm as chef-in-residence, offering monthly master classes in the Elawa Kitchen, as well as hosting a range of special events starting in June.
Gand, executive pastry chef and partner of Chicago’s restaurant Tru, also will be cooking and baking a variety of muffins, breads and other baked goods for the weekly Garden Market.
“We are so excited to have Gale baking and cooking in the kitchen this summer and are looking forward to her new additions to the Garden Market,” said Deedee Borland, co-director of the Garden at Elawa Farm, 1401 MiddleFork Drive, west of Waukegan Road.
A two-time James Beard Award Winner, she has been host of the long-running Food Network show, “Sweet Dreams,” now airing daily on Cooking Channel, and is the author of seven cook books. Her Web site is www.galegand.com.
Gand is a longtime supporter of sustainable agriculture. She is a member of Michelle Obama’s Chefs Move To Schools initiative, teaching cooking and healthy eating to school children in the area. She also forages for local ramps and mushrooms, and picks local fruit with her three children to use in her cooking and her restaurant.
“I’m so excited to be associated with this wonderful gem of a garden,” she said. “The volunteers at Elawa Farm have done so much and I’m inspired to cook from their harvest.”
