ANTIOCH — The first drowning death of the year was confirmed by an autopsy Monday, according to Lake County Coroner Artis Yancey.
Oscar Sanchez, 25, drowned in Lake Marie Saturday evening. The autopsy verified that the cause of death was drowning, and toxicology results showed the Elgin man did not have drugs or alcohol in his system, Yancey said.
Sanchez was boating with relatives on the eastern side of the lake when he jumped in the water for a swim. He began to struggle and was unable to grab a life preserver that relatives threw to him, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Lt. Christopher Thompson.
Relatives called for help, and a county marine unit responded around 6 p.m. Saturday. Divers were brought in but Sanchez’s body was not found until about 10 p.m., Thompson said.
