City officials will host a celebratory rally July 11 in honor of North Chicago’s own hometown hero, NBA Champion Shawn Marion of the Dallas Mavericks.

Mayor Leon Rockingham, Jr. said the open-to-the public event will feature a show by local drill teams, drumlines, performers and special guests.

Marion, who grew up in North Chicago, will receive a “Key to the City” from Rockingham and other awards and accolades from county and state representatives, a city spokesman said Thursday.

He will also receive recognition for his “giving back to the community” efforts as he kicks off the sixth annual Shawn Marion Basketball Camp that he offers free of charge to North Chicago youth.

City officials are calling the fete “a once-in-a-lifetime event.” Marion attended A.J. Katzenmaier and Green Bay Elementary schools.

The rally will be at 4 p.m. at the North Chicago Community High School Gym, 1717 17th St. Attendees will be admitted through gymnasium doors only and are welcome to bring signs, banners and other fanfare, city officials said.

Marion led the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA championship this year, defeating the team he used to play for, the Miami Heat.

A multiple NBA all-star, Marion joined the Mavs in 2009. He played college ball at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
