Talk of Lake County

Fireworks
What is with people getting so bent out of shape about their neighbors fireworks again this year. Fireworks are a problem maybe three, four days a year. I don’t believe people get so angry about their neighbors celebrating our nation’s independence, that they call police and write in to Talk Of The County to complain. No wonder your grandkids don’t visit you anymore.

Fantastic work
I’d like to express my gratitude for the fantastic work that our Waukegan Public Works Department has provided since the tornado hit us June 30. God bless them. I feel sorry for the families for the ComEd guys who had to work so many hours to restore our power as fast as they did. I know it took longer, but there were thousands without. Thanks a lot you guys and you do good work.
Crying game
Where can I get a crying towel for the Waukegan aldermen? The comment “if were not going to get it then the heck with Park City.” I would expect that comment to come out of a 6-year-old child not an adult. They are adults, aren’t they?
Back to Waukegan
Now at the 11th hour the Waukegan City Council is considering a casino. If they do obtain the license they should locate it on the lakefront right by the train station because it will only be train ride away for everyone from Milwaukee to Chicago. Also, all the visitors traveling by car will have to pass through Waukegan giving gas stations, hotels and restaurants a chance at new business. The downtown needs an economic shot in the arm. The Wal-Mart at the Fountain Square and a casino are two different markets because they don’t mix. Go for it and put it where it belongs.
Downtown restaurants
People in Waukegan complain there are no restaurants downtown but I took my family and went to Jerry’s Tacos which is across from the Genesee Theatre and I was very pleasantly surprised. The food was awesome, very fresh and the service was excellent.
Lost its mind?
Has the Antioch District 34 Board of Education lost its mind? They have just awarded a new 5 year contract to their superintendent who has just completed his first year of service in the school district. What happens if they fall out of love with him after a couple of years? Will the board simply buy out the remaining years on the five year contract with our tax money? Their actions regarding the length of the contract after one year of service is just plain irresponsible.
Fine cleanup
The work ethic is not dead in Lake County. The second-lowest bidder of six bids on three large trees took them down and hauled them away on a big modern truck, and it took only took them one hour and forty five minutes with a nice clean up, unbelievable. Three young white guys from Johns Tree Removal from Wadsworth did the work and they all spoke English. I was really pleased.
Stop the stereotype
This is to the person who was complaining about an invasion of privacy for drug testing people who receive public assistance. I have to agree with the other responses that it is not an invasion of privacy. However it is a stereotype. It is not necessarily fair to stereotype everybody who receives any type of public assistance of being a possible drug addict. There needs to be some type of criteria that would cause the drug testing.
Link cards
I am outraged at the spending on the Link cards. People are using Link cards to pay their cell phone bills and to buy Air Jordan gym shoes from the Quick Mart. They should do away with Link cards, food stamps all together and they should only be able to shop at pantries. I think it’s ridiculous. By the way food stamps are not being used properly because all you see is snacks and sodas in the carts and you can also buy tobacco products too. This should really be investigated.
Trail of guilt
The people who own the grocery store in Waukegan that defrauded the food stamp program should pay back every penny, serve time and be sent back to their native country. Also, everyone that participated in the scam should be dropped from the program and all other entitlements should cease. It’s time we help people who are truly deserving, not just irresponsible, selfish and spoiled people.
