Talk of the County

Updated: September 12, 2011 12:25AM

No sirens

We had a serious storm on July 11. Round Lake Beach failed to sound the sirens even though a tornado was present in this area. Now everything is out and ComEd will take multiple days before the power will be up and running again. People are going to die like flies over here and nobody cares. The rates will go up but that doesn’t mean anything. Isn’t that wonderful?

ComEd’s lobbyists

Maybe if ComEd paid more attention to its infrastructure and tree pruning, and less to paying lobbyists in Springfield, there wouldn’t be a half million customers without power.

Grand Avenue rush

What a storm. Where are the police? It was rush hour on Grand Avenue, all the lights were out and there weren’t any cops directing traffic. People were sitting out there for hours. It’s ridiculous. We’re paying for these services and demand that they be used for our benefit.

Lousy storm coverage

WKRS and Lenny Palmer were utterly useless during the storm on the morning of July 11. At 8 a.m., with tornado sirens going off in Waukegan, there was very, very little news from the station. It was later in the morning when WKRS and Palmer started mentioning the storm.

Where’s the help?

After reading the paper July 12, I was really disappointed that North Chicago was barely mentioned as having storm damage. I live on Broadway. That is a through-street and it’s been blocked off because of the power lines and trees down. It’s hard to negotiate through the town. We haven’t had power for 24 hours and I haven’t seen a single utility truck in the area. Where is the help coming from and why are we not being recognized as having had an astronomical amount of damage due to the storm.

Don’t blame Mother Nature

Regarding the recent storm damage to the electrical power lines. Let’s get real, folks. The law says that you cannot have trees going over power lines or growing within 12 feet of the power lines. All power lines are on easements which means ComEd can come in and prune or cut down those trees and they should be able to cut down trees on private property that overhang the power lines. ComEd hired a company that used to go out and carve some very unique shapes in trees. We had a very rainy spring, the trees are heavy with leaves and they should be cut back. It’s our responsibility and ComEd’s responsibility. Let’s not blame Mother Nature.

Third-rate nation

We witnessed the end of the Space Shuttle program. No other space vehicle is available and we have to rely on the Russians which was our first challenger in the space race. The sadness of this day is all the more poignant because it clearly reflects that we are becoming a third-rate nation. Our overspending on wars, bailouts of domestic and foreign entities has accelerated our downward spiral. We may not be able to regain our power, but we must return to our roots as a nation

Loud music

Waukegan drafted an ordinance saying that there are going to be a tickets issued if you’re caught talking on the phone while driving. A person talking on the phone doesn’t bother me as much as this loud music day in and day out. Why isn’t there an ordinance drafted prohibiting speakers from being turned outward? The speakers must be turned inwards toward the driver. If not, you get a fine for breaking the city ordinance on the loud noise and fine the installers. This way the city can make a lot more money, rehire more cops and we can have a more peaceful city. I think it’s a great generator for revenue.

Space program

The people that run our country would have to so stupid for us to give up our space program, and give money and aid to other countries. That money better stay here and I encourage everybody to call your congressmen and oppose. That’s horrible that we have to depend on the Russians now.

Health-care monstrosity

This one is for all the Obamacare supporters. Our small company health insurance has jumped 30 percent in three years. We cannot wait for Obamacare to kick in because for a mere $700 a year we can put our employees into a fabulous Obama Plan which we are sure will be just as good as the excellent private care our good employees receive now for five times that cost. An expense that we are willing to bear and endure, even as it cuts into our bottom line. If anyone of you think the new health-care plan is going to be good for you, then you better get the reading glasses on and read this monstrosity of a health-care plan as it relates to you and your family because a lot of small businesses are going to be putting you into a human heap of a government health-are solution just as planned by the Liberal Left. When this happens, please don’t blame the small business owner.

GOP policies

It ‘s undoubtedly true that Obama’s policies have not restored jobs in anything near an adequate fashion. But those millions of jobs were destroyed on Republicans’ economic watch, as a result of Republican economic policies.

Doing a good job

I have a comment for the people that think Obama is doing this or that. Our Congress makes the laws and the decisions. His job is to try to carry them out and be an administrator and the manager. I think he’s doing a good job under the circumstances, but he does not make the laws.

Looking for a fight

I’d like to say something about President Obama talking about trying to mess with Social Security. He’s opening a whole big can of worms here, and lots of people depend on Social Security. We’ve worked our whole life for that and it’s our money and it’s not his to touch. If you mess with that you’re going to have a war on his hands because people aren’t going to sit back and let him take your money away. We’re just barely making it because we haven’t had a raise in almost three years.

Limit elected terms

Take a look at our career politicians. I think we should place them in the private sector, the real world standing in unemployment lines. It’s time to pass term limits on all elected offices.

Leave him alone

The President is getting a lot of grief about raising the debt ceiling. Everybody to the right is giving him grief and we need to cut spending. Do your homework! President Bush raised the debt ceiling seven times, so leave President Obama alone and let him raise the debt ceiling and take care of our country. Everything he tries to do, you extreme right-wingers are against him.

Lock them up

Why is it that when somebody lies to Congress or to the police they get jail time, yet when our Congress and our politicians lie to the people they get nothing and get rewarded for it by passing raises for themselves? Aren’t we their bosses? If they lie to us, then why can’t we lock them up as fast as they lock us up?
