Talk of the County

Updated: September 13, 2011 12:28AM

Bring jobs back

You hear so much about the national debt and taxes. Why don’t they raise the tariffs on everything that China tries to sell to this country? That’s why we don’t have any jobs here is because all the companies went to different countries. So now what we have to do is to tell those companies, “Sorry if you want to sell your products in America, it’s going to cost you twice as much to bring it in.” Then they’ll bring the jobs back here.

Stupid idea

This is in regard to that Wadsworth roundabout at Hunt Club and Wadsworth roads and also at Hunt Club and Millburn roads. I drove on the one roundabout and it’s totally ridiculous that we’re wasting this kind of money on those things. The county could do a lot more with the roads that they need to have done. It’s going to cost more to maintain these things than what was there already. Somebody’s got to get their heads out of their butts and quit spending money stupidly.

Make it fair

Apparently all the business of the state of Illinois is taken care of. All the bills are paid and everything is 100 percent squared away, because our legislature and governor had more than enough time to pass laws requiring seat belts in the back seat. But, I’m sitting at a stop sign with a guy on a motorcycle wearing flip flops and a pair of shorts. We have to be secure in the back seat but this joker can ride around wearing nothing for protection.

‘Lock box’ looted

The truth is Social Security is the best plan that the government has ever come up with and is financially solvent due to Ronald Reagan. I remember not long ago all the politicians saying they would never touch the Social Security “lock box.” The fact is that they looted $4 trillion out of it.

Environmental attack

The House Interior Appropriations Committee has passed a bill that means less protection for species risking extinction, more pesticides in our water and less funding for our national wildlife refuges. This bill is an all-out attack on our environment and the national treasures that are part of our children’s inheritance. The sacrifice of our wildlife and environment in the name of fiscal austerity is unacceptable.

In defense

After reading the responses about people complaining about fireworks I felt the need to call in and defend myself. I am one of those people that call the police. First of all, fireworks are illegal in Illinois, whatever the holiday. The Fourth of July is only one day, but kids are setting off fireworks for three or four days by my window and my car. That’s what the police are for and I think they agree because they came and they stopped.

It’s still junk food

I read about the Rib Fest at Greenbelt Forest Preserve and how they had “healthy” snow cones that were made with Hi-C and not syrup. I got news for you, Hi-C is made with chemicals and sugar. It’s not healthy, it’s junk food.

More education needed

This is in reference to the picture of the Fielders baseball team in the paper on July 11. They were listening to the National Anthem and there were five players and only one had his hand on his heart and there are five children and only one had his hand on his heart. I’m wondering how these children are being taught in the Zion area, because it seems they don’t know how to respect that song when it’s played. Even the baseball players don’t seem to know what to do. My suggestion is that they get back to school, learn what they are supposed to learn and get their act together.

Not for kids

This is to the immature grandparent that wrote in about the fireworks. There are safety reasons. If it’s awfully dry, they could create a fire, hurt their grandchildren or someone else’s children. That’s why cities spend lots of money to put on firework shows. Mature, adult people would not do this with their children.

Stop the preaching

I’m so tired about politicians preaching about Jesus. Obviously, they should have gone into the ministry instead.

Get it right

In his column, Jeff Bonato commented on the fact that North Chicago High School is 65 years old. He’s incorrect. The high school is not 65 years old.

Raise them right

There was a letter to the editor by Lucille Hood on July 12. The letter is beautiful and her facts are accurate. If all of us would get together and raise our own children properly, everyone’s lives would be so much better.

Kudos, ladies!

The Rib Fest July 10 was a very nice and well-attended event for Greenbelt Forest Preserve. However, I must make this comment: The hierarchies of Greenbelt were remiss. They had four ladies set up all the tents, tables and everything for the event. They had to cut out the men because it came out of their budget. It’s a rotten shame. Those big shots are getting lots of money and they could have spent more for setting up and taking care of the event. But, that’s they way it goes.
