WAUKEGAN — Roadside safety and sobriety checkpoints will be coupled with saturation patrols in the city during the rest of the month, police said.
There are seven locations for the checkpoints, including McAlister Avenue and 8th Street; McAlister and Helmholz Avenue; Williamsburg Drive and Georgetown Lane; the 2100 block of Lorraine Avenue; Walnut and Edwards streets; 10th Street and Lincoln Avenue; and McAree Road and Cornelia Avenue.
The checkpoints will be held from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. to target impaired drivers and heighten public awareness. They are scheduled for Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday this weekend; the weekend of Aug. 19 through 22; and Aug. 26 through 29.
The police department will add saturation patrols between 8 p.m. and 3 a.m. on Thursdays through the end of August. These additional patrols will be enforcing traffic laws with an emphasis on driving under the influence and seat-belt violations.
Funding for this “You Drink & Drive. You Lose.” operation will be paid by the Illinois Department of Transportation through a DUI enforcement grant.
