Carey seeks re-election: Incumbent Pat Carey has announced her candidacy for Lake County Board in the newly formed District 6 in central Lake County, encompassing Grayslake, Hainesville and portions of Round Lake Park and Round Lake Beach. The Democrat was first elected in 2008. “I see the top issues facing Lake County as jobs, transportation, economic development and the environment. We need to make progress in all of these areas to ensure a high quality of life for all Lake County residents,” Carey said. She is a 29-year resident of Grayslake and started her career in local government in the late 1980s. She served four years as a Grayslake trustee and eight years as mayor. She spent 20 in business as a technology executive and also worked several years in municipal economic development.

Durkin to run again: Lake County Board member Bill Durkin of Waukegan announced he will run again to retain his District 8 seat next year. Durkin is a Democrat and is completing his first term on the board, serving on the Law and Judicial Committee, and the Revenue, Records & Legislative Committee. “I look forward to continuing to respond to the needs of my constituents and building coalitions with local officials to meet our challenges over the next four years,” he said.

Sente coffee: State Rep. Carol Sente, D-Vernon Hills, will host a coffee shop stop from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Starbucks at 275 Parkway Drive, Lincolnshire.

Tenth Dems: Tenth Congressional District Democrats is accepting applications for its Tenth Dems Fall Internship Program, available to high school juniors and seniors, college students, and graduate or law students with a desire to help the Democratic Party. The internship offers candidates the opportunity to develop transferable skills to whatever career path they may choose to follow. Fall interns are expected to commit eight hours per week during the school year. Computer skills are desirable. The organization is looking especially for applicants with Web administration and/or data management skills. Internships are unpaid educational volunteer positions. Course credit is available with cooperating high schools and colleges. Applicants should submit a brief paragraph explaining why they want this internship, along with a resume of their educational background and activities. Neither need be formal.

Garrett, Morrison: State Sen. Susan Garrett, D-Lake Forest, and West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison, Democratic candidate for the 29th Senate District will hold a joint press conference Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. at the Italian Kitchen Restaurant, 648 Deerfield Road, Deerfield. Garrett said she will be making a statement about the upcoming election for her Senate seat, which she has held since 2002. Morrison announced last month her intention to seek the Democratic nomination for that seat.

Waites announces: Lake County Associate Judge Nancy Waites of Mundelein has announced her Democratic candidacy for the newly created full circuit judgeship in the Third Judicial Sub-Circuit. Waites is a former assistant state’s attorney who served as supervisor in the child support enforcement division. Additionally, she was a private practitioner. She has served as an Associate Judge in the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit for almost seven years and currently sits in the Park City Branch Court.
