Energy meeting: State Rep. Rita Mayfield, D-Waukegan, will hold a town hall meeting focusing on reducing energy consumption and saving money on winter energy cost from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the Waukegan Public Library, 128 N. County St. “My goal is to encourage people to cut their energy consumption this winter, which should result in lower heating and electricity bills,” Mayfield said. The meeting will also suggest ways residents can prepare their homes and families for the upcoming harsh forecasted winter. Education forum: A public forum on the involvement of the federal government in public education will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the Highland Park Country Club, 1201 Park Avenue West, Highland Park. Co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Highland Park/Highwood, Deerfield, and Lake Forest/Lake Bluff, Panelists will include Ralph Martire, Dr. Sue Hebson and former state Rep. Kathy Ryg, D-Vernon Hills. A question-and-answer period will follow. Details, (847) 432-9432.
Sheyman endorsed: Three Democratic congressmen, including the Congressional Progressive Caucus’ two co-chairs, have endorsed Ilya Sheyman of Waukegan for Congress in the 10th District. Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota, Rep. Raúl Grijalva of Arizona and Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. of Illinois, have thrown their backing behind Sheyman.
Morrison social: Julie Morrison, Democratic candidate for state Senate in the 29th District, will hold an ice cream social Nov. 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Potbelly Sandwich Shop, Deerfield Square, 740 Waukegan Road, Deerfield. The event is free and open to the public.
Health fair: State Sen. Suzi Schmidt, R-Lake Villa, will be hosting a health fair from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 14 at Warren Township Senior Center, 17801 W. Washington St., Gurnee. The free senior health fair will have legislative brochures available to explain state programs and benefits. Additionally, several dozen participants will be available to provide information on state, local and private programs for seniors. Furthermore, there will be health screenings for blood pressure and flu shots will be available (free with Medicare Part B; $29.99 without).
