LINCOLNSHIRE — State Rep. Carol Sente, D-Vernon Hills, recognized 429 local high school students who have been selected as 2012-2013 Illinois State Scholars by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC). Selected students represent a variety of 59th district communities, including Waukegan, Gurnee, Park City, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Libertyville, Indian Creek, Lincolnshire, Long Grove, Mundelein, Buffalo Grove, Deerfield, Northbrook, Riverwoods, Vernon Hills and Wheeling.
“The large number of state scholars in our community is evidence of the wonderful schools and civic organizations available to students,” Sente said. “These hard-working students have proven themselves to be among the brightest in the state. Whether they choose to become entrepreneurs, doctors, teachers, engineers, or any other profession, their futures are bright.”
According to ISAC, Illinois State Scholar winners rank in the top ten percent of high school seniors from 773 different high schools across the state. Selection is based on SAT, ACT and/or Prairie State Achievement Exam scores, and/or class rank at the end of the junior year. High school guidance counselors work in conjunction with ISAC to determine the winners.
“In today’s competitive, global economy, job seekers face a larger pool of talent and it is vital that we ensure our students have the resources and opportunities needed to prepare them for this market,” Sente said. “Illinois State Scholars are among the best and the brightest in our state’s high schools. I commend these students, their families and their teachers for the outstanding effort they have put forward.”
In addition to a congratulatory letter, certificate of achievement, and statewide recognition, Illinois State Scholars are encouraged to cite the honor when applying for college admissions and scholarships.
