Defendant killed restaurant manager ‘because he could,’ prosecutor says

James Ealy kept the change — the dimes and quarters he stole from a Burger King restaurant after strangling manager Mary Hutchinson, Lake County prosecutors said. Investigators days later discovered $40 in dimes and $70 in quarters stuffed in a pillowcase in Ealy’s apartment — amounts matching those taken from the Lindenhurst restaurant during the Nov. 27, 2006, robbery.

Recent Stevenson High School student faces federal drug, gun charges

A recent Stevenson High School student and current Deerfield resident has been accused of selling heroin and owning numerous firearms, according to a federal complaint unsealed May 21. Dmitriy Melandovich has been charged with possession of heroin with intent to distribute. He also is accused of selling 12 grams of heroin and buying five firearms in late April in Buffalo Grove.

Search and rescue continues after devastating Moore tornado leaves at least 24 dead

MOORE, Okla. — A monstrous tornado at least a half-mile wide roared through the Oklahoma City suburbs Monday, flattening entire neighborhoods and destroying an elementary school with a direct blow as children and teachers huddled against winds up to 200 mph. At least seven children were among 24 killed, and officials said the death toll was expected to rise. Hospitals were treating more than 120 patients, including about 50 children. The Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s Office said there could be as many as 40 more fatalities from the tornado.

DUI figures show less drinking and driving in Lake County

Maybe it’s more police officers on the road, an increase in public education or fear of punishment and the hassles of getting a license back after a DUI. Although several officials have suggested differing reasons why, they agree that the number of drunken-driving arrests is going down.
