GARY — New owners may soon breathe new life into the shuttered Miller Bakery Cafe.
Jack Strode and Diana Twyman, a Miller resident, could not be reached for comment, but they are the owners of The Strode Restaurant Group, a newly formed company with a mailing address in Miller.
An orange placard on the picture window of the venerable restaurant, 555 S. Lake St., indicates the owners have applied for a liquor application. Their hearing will be Jan. 13.
Joe VanDyk, Gary’s zoning administrator, said Wednesday no one has applied for a business license to reopen the restaurant, but it is not uncommon for owners to await the outcome of a liquor license hearing.
Former owner and chef Gary Sanders, who also owns Bartlett’s, a restaurant in Beverly Shores, closed Miller Bakery Cafe in 2010 after a 21-year run.
The restaurant was a popular eatery and lounge and even drew the attention of the popular PBS television program “Check Please!”
Prior to the restaurant opening in the mid-1980s, the building was a bakery, serving customers for 45 years beginning in 1941.
