No matter the level, in girls high-school basketball, defense still wins.
So it goes for the St. Martin de Porres Knights, who recently held the Islamic Foundation School Chargers from Villa Park to six points (39-6 final) in a Metro Prep Conference game.
The game was played at the Waukegan Boys and Girls Club facility on Sheridan/Genesee on the far southeast side of Waukegan — an arena that’s walking distance from St. Martin de Porres.
Freshman Cheyanne Williams scored a career-high 18 points to lead the Knights to the lopsided win.
The only downer was that star senior point guard Rhavin Cole went down with an ankle injury early and didn’t return.
With seniors Karolyn Williams and Ashley Alden dominating the glass (St. Martin had a 38-17 rebounding edge in the game), St. Martin de Porres raced out to leads of 15-2 and 25-4 to effectively ended the competitive phase of the game.
The Knights’ defensive forced the Chargers into 18-percent shooting from the field and also generated 16 turnovers.
Jasmin Ocampo scored seven points for the winners, and Cole had five before being injured.
With the win, the Knights now have their sights on seizing one of the top two seeds for the Metro Prep Conference tournament.
