Runners from Lake Forest and Stevenson won individual titles, and Mundelein and Barrington won team championships Wednesday at the Lake County Invitational cross country meet, held at Lakewood Forest Preserve in Wauconda.

In the girls competition, Mundelein prevail by placing five in the top 17.

That offset a 1-2 finish by Lake Forest girls.

The winner was the Helen Schlachtenhaufen who, indeed, is fortunate that cross country is not a sport in which athletes’ names are on the back of their jerseys.

Helen, who does not have a nickname, covered the three-mile course in 19:07, three seconds ahead of her teammate, Elle Chody.

“Elle and I ran together the whole time,” said Helen. “I was there at the finish, but she really pushed me the entire way.”

Mundelein’s best were Stephanie Johnson (sixth) and Elena Palacios (seventh).

“The plan was to put four people in the top 20. We’ve been struggling a little bit with the fifth spot in our workouts. We needed someone to step up and Emily Schlebecker (17th as the champs’ fifth runner) did that today,” said John Osmanski, Mundelein’s coach.

In the boys race, Stevenson’s Brendan Wood — whose older brother Kevin was second in this meet two years ago, won his race by six seconds in 15:59.

“At the start of the race, I just tried to stay with the lead pack,” the senior said. “With a mile a go, I started to pull away. I just tried to pick up the pace through the final mile.”

In the team scoring, Barrington placed five in the top 22 to beat Highland Park.

“With about three-quarters of a mile to go, the Stevenson kid (Wood) broke and made a move that I couldn’t catch,” said Highland Park’s Jonah Hanig, who finished second. “But overall, it was a good team race for us.”

Racing has gone on at Lakewood seemingly forever, but a new course is being used this year.

“It was a little bumpy,” said Wood. “ But I like it better than the old course. It’s a little flatter so you get some faster times.”
