Edgar Rodriguez had two goals and an assist and Round Lake set a school record for wins in a season with Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Zion-Benton in the semifinals of the Class 3A Warren Regional tournament.
The Panthers (18-3-1) will face Warren at noon on Saturday. The teams tied 1-1 during the regular season.
Rodriguez, a defender, scored on a free kick from just outside the box in the 25th minute and converted a corner kick in the 69th minute.
He also set up Mauricio Salgado in the 58th minute.
Zion-Benton got a PK goal late from Byron Ramirez.
“In the years I’ve been coaching a Round Lake, Edgar is one of the smartest defenders we’ve had,” said Panther coach Hugo Tellez. “He plays with a defensive mindset, but when he’s able to move up on the attack, he has great vision.”
As for Saturday’s match with Warren, Tellez said, “It’s going to be a great game. We’re both fast teams, so you’re going to see a real fast-paced game. The first game was great. I expect the rematch to be just as good. It’s going to come down to who wants it more.”
