WARREN 7, ROUND LAKE 3

Warren’s game against Rockford Boylan on Tuesday is a rematch of a sectional final played last year at Barrington won by the Blue Devils 2-0 that ended Boylan’s 48-game unbeaten streak.

Warren was able to break down the Round Lake back line and had the finishing touch all day. The Devils scored on seven of the 10 shots they put on frame. Round Lake had 14 shots, but Warren keeper R.J. Hill came up with numerous quality stops to keep the Panthers from mounting a comeback.

Auner Solis scored two goals (and had the hat trick on his foot on a breakaway in the 74th minute but was stymied at the top of the box) and Daniel Szczepanek had a goal and two assists.

Round Lake star Mauricio Salgado sat most of the first half after aggravating a knee injury suffered in the regional semifinal against Grant. When he returned in the second half, he was clearly not at 100 percent

The Panthers finished with a school-record 18 wins on the season, but got knocked out by Warren at the regional-final level for the second year in a row. Last year Warren won 3-0. The teams played earlier this season to a 1-1 draw at Round Lake.

Warren earned three yellow cards to Round Lake’s none.

Auner Solis had four goals in Warren’s two regional games. “This was the best we’ve played offensively all season,” he said. “We’ve been practicing hard. When you’re really concentrating on what you want to accomplish in training, it shows in the game.”

Auner on teammate Daniel Szczepanek, who had three goals and two assists in regional play: “He’s amazing. He’s a tremendous playmaker. He’s able to set us up from all over the field, and he’s really unselfish.”

Warren head coach Jason Ahonen: “I think this is how everyone has expected us to play, including ourselves. We showed today that we’re capable of playing at that level. When we’re focused and we’re all dialed in, we can do some pretty special things.”

Disappointed Round Lake head coach Hugo Tellez: “The way Warren played today, they were by far the best team we’ve played all year. It was a great season for our program. This (the boys soccer team) is what we have at Round Lake (High School) — 18 wins, we won our division again, but we wanted more.”
