Three Waukegan Jr. Bulldogs youth football teams reached the finals of The Chicagoland Youth Football League’s prestigious Sunday program.
But while the Waukegan Middleweights and Bantams lost championship games, the Jr. Bulldog Featherweight team beat Zion-Benton 21-14 to earn a huge trophy for the program.
In the TCYFL, there are five weight/age groups in the Sunday program, and three separate tournaments within each weight/age group.
Waukegan played in the smallest division, with teams separated based on number of football players in the program.
Waukegan’s Featherweight win was the second this year over Zion-Benton. The Jr. Bulldogs prevailed during the regular season 12-0.
During the season, the Jr. Bulldogs started out 7-0, but then finished with back-to-back losses to Lake in the Hills and Elgin. Those two teams played for a championship, as well, but in a division for bigger programs.
To reach the finals, Waukegan beat Barrington 14-0 and Portage Park from Chicago 20-0.
This was the second year in a row that Waukegan’s program won a title in the Sunday Featherweight Division.
