No high school boys soccer team from Lake County had ever won the state championship until Warren struck gold a couple of weeks ago.
Now, as we move into the winter sports season, Lake County boys basketball teams are in a similar situation.
No team from north of Lake-Cook Road has ever brought home the big trophy, although several have come tantalizingly close in the past few years.
The quest to match Warren’s soccer feat will begin on Monday, as the high school hoops season gets under way.
Seventeen of the 21 area school are in action at some venue, with Lake Zurich (at West Chicago); and Wauconda, Grayslake North and Grant (all at the Richmond/Johnsburg tourney) starting on Tuesday.
The main event locally is the new Mundelein/Warren tournament, which will run Monday-Wednesday and Friday-Saturday at both sites.
It will feature fan-favorite matchups such as Warren/Waukegan (Monday), Waukegan/North Chicago (Tuesday) and North Chicago/Warren (Wednesday)
