JayQuan McCloud (19), JaVairius Amos-Mays (18) and Big Kurt Hall (11) combined for 48 points as North Chicago opened its boys basketball season with a 73-48 win over Lake Forest Academy on Monday in the Mundelein/Warren tournament.
Thirteen players scored for the Warhawks, who play Waukegan at 5:30 Tuesday at Warren.
“People have expectations for these guys,” said North Chicago coach King Coleman. “After I took them out and sat them on the bench in the third quarter (after LFA closed to within 36-27), when they went back in, I thought they started playing North Chicago basketball.
“I’m not upset. I got to see a couple other kids play who I was very impressed with, but the players have to understand we have to do this as a team.”
After the Big Three came back in, North Chicago went on a 20-4 run to ice the game.
Two of the players Coleman liked were sophomore Jamero Shelton and Traveris Knox, the latter a senior transfer from Milwaukee.
“The Shelton we saw tonight playing defense and rebounding ... that was the Shelton we’ve been looking for the last couple of weeks.
“We need him to come in and bring some energy. I also thought (6-foot-4) played pretty well when he got in there.”
Knox had five points, four rebounds and four steals. Shelton had two points and three boards.
For Lake Forest Academy, Dejon Drissett had 12 points and seven rebounds. He’s a sophomore from Canada.
Porter Veach and Brandon Amaroso each had seven points. Veach is from Winnetka and Amaroso is from Barrington.
LFA plays Warren at 7 on Tuesday.
