JaVairius Amos-Mays scored 22 points, JayQuan McCloud 14 and Jarrod Coleman 13 as North Chicago opened North Suburban Conference Prairie Division play with a 92-47 thumping of host Grant on Friday night.
The Warhawks (5-0) will host Antioch on Tuesday. Grant (2-3) is at Wauconda on Tuesday.
The outcome — as the score suggests — was never in doubt.
North Chicago took control of the game early, parlaying eight Grant turnovers into a 20-9 first-half lead.
The lead expanded to 39-19 at halftime, as McCloud had 11 points and Amos-Mays eight in the first half.
The lead ballooned to 70-38 after three quarters.
“Our goal is to get back to Peoria, so we’re working on things,” said Warhawks coach King Coleman. “If the game gets close, so be it. If the lead gets big, so be it.
“So, it worked to advantage to have the lead.”
That gave the coach a chance to see a lot of players ... and a lot of them looked pretty good.
“It’s going to take 11 or 12 of us to reach our goal of getting back to Peoria,” said Coleman.
North Chicago finished fourth in the 2011 state tourney and second last year. No Lake County team has ever won the state title or made three consecutive trips to the Final Four.
For Grant, Rayvon Jones was the leading scorer with 12 points. Ryan Noda chipped in with 10.
North Chicago was 23-of-28 shooting free throws in the game.
Big Kurt Hall had seven points for the winners.
