Stevenson High School’s Cheer squad opened its season last weekend by winning the Big School Division at a tournament hosted by Sandburg High in Orland Park.
There were 11 teams in the Patriots’ division. Not only did the Pats win, but they were the Best In Show winner as they posted the highest score of all schools in all divisions.
The team is coached by Jessica Murphy and she’s assisted by Julie Penteris.
This Sunday, Stevenson will try to make it 2-for-2 as it hosts its own tournament.
Many area schools will be competing, including emerging state powerhouse Grant and a rising team in this area — the Waukegan Bulldogs.
The high school varsity meet will be held in the afternoon, after a JV and club-cheer competition is held in the morning.
Stevenson, Lake Zurich, Grant and Antioch are the powerhouses in this sport in Lake County.
The cheer season runs from December to the end of January.
