Lakes High School has no swimming pool and, hence, no swimming team.
But that hasn’t stopped Lakes senior Kyle Aerne from carving out a niche on the high school swimming scene.
During the regular prep boys swim season (November-February), Aerne competes for a club team.
Then, when the state series is held, he dons his Lakes High School swim cap and represents the Eagles in the pool.
Last year, he finished fifth in the state in the 100-yard breaststroke, and three of the four swimmers who beat him were seniors.
Next year, Aerne will be swimming for Eastern Michigan University in the Mid-American Conference.
Ironically, Aerne — a winner in the classroom as well as in the pool — will still be an Eagle, as that also is the Eastern Michigan University nickname.
