GIRLS BASKETBALL
Vernon Hills 45, Antioch 28: The unbeaten Cougars virtually wrapped up the NSC Prairie championship with this decisive win at home. Vernon Hills finished second in last year’s start tourney and are 13-0. In this win, Meri Bennett-Swanson (16 points, 6 boards), Lauren Webb (9 points, 8 rebounds) and Sydney Smith (7 points, 8 rebounds) led the way. Antioch is 4-1 in the division and Vernon Hills is 5-0.
Libertyville 49, Lake Forest 25: The Wildcats are 3-2 in the NSC Lake after this nice win. Dana Kym and Olivia Mayer combined for 23 points for the Orange, which is playing its “Red Out” game on Monday at 7 to support the American Heart Association.
Wauconda wins twice: The Bulldogs (4-8) beat Marengo 47-35 and Rockford Jefferson 55-26 to finish 2-1 in pool play in the 16-team Northern Illinois Holiday Classic being played in McHenry County. Against Marengo, Lauren Nee had 13 points, and she had 11 against Rockford.
Grayslake North wins twice: The Knights beat Marengo 53-26 and Rockford Jefferson 56-30 to finish 3-0 in pool play and advance to the semifinals of the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic, being played in McHenry County. The Knights are the defending champs.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Highland Park 46, Lake Zurich 31: Brandon Krawitz scored 16 points for the winner (3-7). The Giants will play at Deerfield on Tuesday night.
Mundelein 99, Libertyville 62: Playing its best ball of the season, the Mustangs got big games from Chino Ebube (26 points, 8 boards) and Sean O’Brien (18 points, 14 rebounds, 11 assists). Mundelein (5-4 overall) can climb into a first-place tie in the NSC Lake by beating Zion-Benton on Friday.
WRESTLING
Glenbrook South Tourney: Grant won the team title at the prestigious event, as 182-pound Tony Cashmore (14-0) finished first and Nick Koch (106), Gage Datlovsky (113), Troy Parent (120), Jared Lalanda (195) and heavyweight Dan Haeffele all finished second. Grant had 223 team points to 213 for Notre Dame. Wauconda’s Nate Mageira (220), and Carmel heavyweight Jake Cochrane (15-0) also won titles.
GIRLS GYMNASTICS
Holiday Quad at Lake Forest: Carmel (144.925) edged Lake Forest (143.8) to win the four-team event on Friday night that also included Schaumburg and Deerfield. Carmel’s won the all-around with 38.575. She won vault with 9.925 and tied Lake Forest’s Brittany Moccia for first on floor with 9.7. Kylie Carlson of Lake Forest won beam with 9.55 and Feely, Moccia and Lake Forest’s Kat McKeon tied for first on bars.
