The YMCA facility in Waukegan may be closed, but the youth swim program connected to it is carrying on quite well, thank you.
The Northern Lake YMCA Seahorses — “swim with horsepower” is their motto — recently completed its winter invitational schedule with a successful trip to the David Wolf Invitational at the Belvidere YMCA.
In a crowded field that included more than 300 swimmers, several Seahorses finished at nor near the top in the age-group competition.
First-year swimmer Josh Temaner (boys 13-14) qualified for the District Championships meet in both the 50-yard and 100 freestyle events.
“Although the swimmers are coming off a hard winter practice schedule, this is a great meet to see some of the teams they will be competing against on the state level,” Seahorses coach Mike Hewitt said. “With three meets coming up in the next three weekends, we hope to see even more time drops.”
The next meet for the Seahorses is Jan. 19 against the Folgia YMCA at Waukegan High School.
The team will be holding its annual swim-a-thon fund-raiser on Jan. 26 at Waukegan High. Visit www.seahorseswimming.org if you would like to donate.
