The Waukegan-based Northern Lake YMCA Seahorses youth swim team continued its season with two successful meets.
In the first, the Seahorses hosted the Foglia YMCA Aqua Ducks from Lake Zurich and had two new district qualifiers, in addition to several other outstanding swims.
Zion Levy qualified in the 8-under girls 25 yard backstroke and Jean Marquez posted a qualifying time in the boys 11-12 50 butterfly.
The next week, Vaughan Spratt-Szarzynski led the small group of Seahorses who competed in the Super Sunday Pentathlon IX, hosted by the Buehler YMCA Blue Marlin swim team in Palatine.
At this meet, swimmers compete in all five events—freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, and the individual medley.
Swimmers in each age group were awarded for the lowest cumulative times at the meet.
Spratt-Szarzynski won the girls 9-10 breaststroke and freestyle and placed third in the IM to place second overall in her age group.
“It is very encouraging to see new swimmers qualify each week,” said Seahorses head coach Mike Hewitt.
“There are several other kids who are very close to qualifying times who we hope to see have drops in the next couple of weeks.”
The team’s next meet is Saturday at 9 a.m. at Waukegan High School against teams from the High Ridge and Pav YMCAs of Chicago.
