One era ended, but another continued at the IHSA sectional girls gymnastics meet on Thursday night at Stevenson High School.

Ending was Carmel High School’s reign of team dominance in the sport.

The Corsairs won team state titles in 2010, 2011 and 2012, but fell short at the Stevenson Sectional and failed to qualify for this year’s state meet, set for next weekend at Palatine High School.

But while Carmel couldn’t make it happen as a team, the Corsairs’ long run of individual excellence continued in the persona of senior Lauren Feely.

The senior — who has been an individual star at state for the last two years, will make it three next weekend.

At the sectional, she won the all-around with an average of 38.175, ahead of second-place finisher Kylie Carlson of Lake Forest (37.85).

Feely also won vaulting (9.85) and floor (9.65), and took third on bars (9.5) and fourth on beam (9.175).

Besides Feely, the other wonderful story to come out of the sectional was Lake Forest qualifying its entire team for state.

That was a terrific head-into-retirement present given by the Scout gymnasts to coaching legend Robin Straus. She not only has been involved in coaching for 30 years, but she is one of the great ambassadors for the sport.

Helping the Scouts qualify for state were Carlson, Kat McKeon, Carly Schmidt and Brittany Moccia.

In the team scoring, New Trier and Lake Forest finished 1-2.

The top five finishers in each event automatically qualified for state. So besides gymnasts from Lake Forest and Carmel’s Feely, also competing in Palatine will be:

■ Alyssa Weisberg of Stevenson (1st on beam).

■ Alli Tran of Vernon Hills (4th all-around, 3rd in vaulting, 2nd on bars), 5th on floor.

■ Sarah Cohen-Smith of Carmel (2nd in vaulting).

■ Hannah McGreevy of Vernon Hills (5th all-around, 4th on bars, 2nd on floor).

■ Becky Stochl of Warren (3rd on beam).

■ Kari Osowski of Carmel (5th on beam).
